sleep easier and you will feel better when you leave your home empty.
- Smoke Detectors - Having smoke detectors is pretty common sense, but you wouldn’t believe how many times I go to someone’s home that doesn’t have any. Generally most people have them, but do not have enough of them. You need one in each bedroom, in main hallways, in the laundry room, kitchen and utility room. Don’t forget the attic and basement. Along with smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors are great too.
- Fire Extinguishers - This is another fairly common sense item to have around. But most people I know do not have them at all. Did you know by having fire extinguishers in your home, you can get a discount on your home insurance? It’s important to have fire extinguishers, but it is also important to learn how to use them properly.
- Door Alarms - You don’t need a big fancy alarm system, you can get those little battery operated magnetic door alarms. Having these will allow you to sleep a little easier, and if someone does happen to breach the door way, the screeching alarm will send them running in the other direction. You can also buy those same alarms for your windows, in particularly first floor windows.
- Fire Proof Safe - A fire proof safe is essential for keeping important documents safe, for example birth certificates, the deed to your home, wills and other official documents.
- Dead Bolt Locks - Dead bolts are very important, and difficult to break through. They offer the best protection when it comes to locking exterior doors.
- Escape Ladder for Second Story Bedrooms - Having these escape ladders can be a huge life saver. They fold up and store under the window, or can be stored under the beds, and pulled out when needed.
- Fire Blankets - These blankets are fire retardant and are excellent at protecting people as they are escaping a home full of flames and smoke. They keep the heat off of everyone as they escape.
- Outdoor Motion Sensor Lights - These are absolutely necessary, but they are great deterrents to would be intruders. Coming on when they detect motion, will usually immobilize an intruder for a few seconds, then send them packing.
- Front and Back Door - Yeah I know, duh right? But I have been in several homes that only have one

entrance. If something would happen in or near that door then you would be forced to go out a window, which can be done, but is not as safe.
- Escape Plan - Having and practicing an escape plan is great during a fire or tornado, or whenever you need out quickly. Practice your plan at least once a month, and have a designated meeting area for different types of disasters, example the tree out back for when there is a fire, a closet or basement for tornadoes, etc.
Well there you have it, 10 things to keep you, your family and your home safe from several types of things, like intrusion, fire and tornado. While these are great, they are not absolutely necessary, and there are several other things that can be done to further your safety and protection, but these 10 will be a great start.
